Martha Wainwright is bundling her young son into a New York taxi, yelling at the driver to turn down the radio, when our call is connected.

Multi-tasking was a skill instilled in the Canadian singer from an early age and recent events have only added to the emotional plate-spinning upon which her career has hinged.

First-time parenthood arrived for Wainwright tinged with sadness at the tail-end of 2009, coming just as her mother and fellow folk singer-songwriter Kate McGarrigle was dying of cancer.

Caught between conflicting feelings, Wainwright dealt with her bereavement through music, recording the final song that McGarrigle ever put to paper, the haunting Proserpina.

“The song is a mother and daughter story of death and rebirth so it was poignant for her to have written it at the end of her life,” Wainwright says.

“I wanted to be as close to her as possible and climb into her mind after she died and the song struck me as a way to do that.”

Martha Wainwright Emerges, an Interview With The L Stop

Surrounded by exposed brick and wine barrels in the bustling atmosphere of City Winery, there is a clear view of the stage from every table. In an equal parts male and female crowd, full of late 30s to mid 50s couples who are slightly randy and clearly enjoying the house made wine, singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright takes the stage with her guitar, a drummer and her husband on bass.

She opens with “This Life” from her eponymous 2005 CD and, between quips with her husband and quick swigs of whiskey, performs fan favorites, new songs, and French covers that are vocally reminiscent of Edith Piaf.

Her impressive abilities are most showcased on the song “Some People,” but it is on “Proserpina,” a song penned by her late mother, folk singer Kate McGarrigle, that she throws her head back in a tears-inducing primal wail.

Wainwright became a mother and lost her own mother within a short period of time. What came of this contrast of loss and new beginnings is Come Home to Mama. The album is full of raw, confessional songs written by Wainwright, with matter-of-fact, yet textured, lyrics.

Though she is the daughter of Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of critically-acclaimed singer Rufus Wainwright, Martha has her own distinct sound borne of a strong, solid musical roots.

Concert Addicts rewiew of Martha Wainwright at The Rio Theatre

Martha Wainwright has a remarkable stage presence. She sucks her audience in & you can’t help but be transfixed by her voice and her quirky, enchanting spirit. One of the funniest moments of the show was when Martha showed her curiosity and surprise at the fact that there was a server actually walking up and down the aisles selling drinks during the show. The hostess graciously offered Martha a beer on the house and the packed crowd erupted in laughter over their witty, candid exchange. She played for nearly an hour and a half and yet the time seemed to fly by. She took her audience on a brilliant, varied ride, weaving her newer and older material together to create a masterpiece set list. I love hearing artists speak about where inspiration for a particular song came from, or giving more insight into what a song is about & Martha treated her audience with just the right dose of background and let them into some of the profound impact her mother had on her musical career. With her husband on piano, she also treated us to a couple songs in French. Knowing that the French language is foreign to most west-coasters, she let us know what exactly she was singing about and gave extremely captivating, dramatic performances of some very beautiful songs. The charisma she brings to her performances makes her transitions between musical styles seamless. She really is a master of her craft. Although I have a soft spot for her older work, after this show, I have developed a deeper love and appreciation for her newest album, Come Home to Mama, which, I was very happy to find out is also available in vinyl. I feel so very fortunate to have been able to spend my evening basking in her presence and beautiful artistry. Read more…

Martha and Rufus Discuss “Sing Me The Songs That Say I Love You”

The concert doc Sing Me the Songs That Say I Love You, Rufus and Martha Wainwright’s moving tribute to their recently deceased mom, Canadian folk singer Kate McGarrigle, screened to a packed theater at the Berlinale last week. (Participants in the film, directed by Lian Lunson, include Anna McGarrigle, Kate’s sister and writing partner; Norah Jones; and Jimmy Fallon, who tap-dances and does a song using a washboard and spoons.) Though Rufus was a bit jet-lagged and partied-out after a long night at the Paris Bar — “a fantastic institution of classic Berlinism,” as he put it — he was happy to be back in the city where he first got together with his husband, Jörn, and recorded his 2007 album Release the Stars. We spoke to him and Martha about the film, their competitive streak, and fame.
